About

Burl is a bespoke furniture and cabinetmaking atelier working almost entirely in solid hardwood — dining tables, case goods, seating, lighting, and architectural millwork built to order, one commission at a time.

The shop was founded on a simple premise: furniture that is built to move with the seasons outlasts furniture that fights them. Every board that comes into the shop is chosen against its published shrinkage behavior, not just its color and figure, and every joint is cut to accommodate the real dimensional change solid wood undergoes across a heating season. We publish the wood-movement math we use ourselves — see the wood species library and the movement calculator on the home page — because a client who understands why a breadboard end has a slotted screw hole is a client who won’t panic the first time a panel gap opens a sixteenth of an inch in January.

We keep our commission count deliberately small. Every piece is designed, built, and finished by the same small crew, and our lead cabinetmaker is on the shop floor for every glue-up, not just the client meeting. That is the only way the drawing and the delivered piece stay the same piece.

We build for residential clients furnishing a single room or a whole house, for hospitality groups fitting out a restaurant or hotel lobby, and for corporate clients who want a boardroom table that will still be the boardroom table in twenty years.
