The commission
The client wanted a single statement chair for a library nook, low enough for reading but with real lumbar support. The arms are bent-laminated from thin walnut strips over a curved form, giving continuous unbroken grain around the bend rather than the short grain a carved arm of the same shape would have — a real structural advantage as well as a visual one, since short grain across a load-bearing curve is a classic long-term failure point in chair arms.
Seat and back are a tensioned leather sling, hand-stitched, replaceable independently of the frame.
